INFORMS International Meeting in Singapore

This week, Dr. Justus Vogel, Leader of the Research Group Hospital Processes, Structures, and Operations, had the opportunity to present findings from an ongoing collaborative study with the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen (Department for Surgical Intensive Care headed by Prof. Dr. med. Miodrag Filipovic) at the INFORMS International Meeting in Singapore

Concretely, Justus gave a presentation on the topic “Causal Effects and Optimal Policy Learning for Intensive Care Unit Discharge Decisions to Solve Hospital Process Bottlenecks”. In their study, Mio, Johannes, and Justus are aiming to discover a decision policy that will reduce the number of readmissions linked to early discharges. To this end, they employ two causal forest algorithms to identify patients for ICU discharge with the lowest change in readmission risk due to the discharge timing.

For more information on this topic, please see an excerpt of the slides presented at the conference (Tab “Conference Contributions”) and an early working paper from January/March 2025, or contact Justus directly at Justus.Vogelunisg.ch
