We are pleased to announce the publication of an editorial by Rudolf Morant, MD, President of the Cancer League of Eastern Switzerland, in collaboration with colleagues from our Chair of Health Economics, Policy and Management at the University of St.Gallen, the Cancer League of Eastern Switzerland and Axel Gräwingholt. The editorial is entitled "The potential benefits of artificial intelligence in an organised population-based screening programme" and summarises the potential benefits of artificial intelligence in mammography screening programmes.
This is relevant as mammography screening programmes are already able to detect breast cancer at earlier stages, allowing for less invasive therapies and leading to better survival. However, the considerable number of interval carcinomas and additional investigations that are necessary, the majority of which turn out not to be carcinomas, must be viewed critically. In this respect, the question arises as to whether artificial intelligence as a new technology in diagnostic medicine can improve the quality of mammography screening programmes.
Specifically, retrospective studies and our own initial data show that artificial intelligence will potentially change the approach to mammography screening programmes in the future in the direction of personalised screening, with significant improvements in quality.
