On August 27th, Dr. Justus Vogel gave a talk at the provider network “SingHealth” in Singapore. Supported by one of his co-authors, Johannes Cordier, he presented the results of the study Causal Effects and Policy Learning for Intensive Care Unit Discharge Decisions. Participants included physicians, health services researchers, health economists, and data scientists from one of the three health clusters in Singapore.
For their study, Justus and Johannes collaborate with Prof. Dr. med. Miodrag Filipovic from the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen to investigate how to support physicians’ decision-making with causal machine learning algorithms. When evaluated on retrospective data, pre-liminary results show that the causal machine learning model and physicians agree on roughly 50-60% of the discharge decisions, while the remaining decisions could be optimized, given sufficient downstream resources and absence of other decision constraints.
With the audience and SingHealth, Justus and Johannes discussed similar application areas in Singaporean hospitals.
