The future of hospital care in Appenzell Ausserrhoden

In the current debate on allowing private investors to participate in the Appenzell Ausserrhoden hospital network, Dr. Justus Vogel, research group leader and health economist at the Chair of Health Economics, Policy, and Management at our School of Medicine, shared his perspective in a discussion with Yves Balmer, head of the Department of Health and Social Affairs AR, and Renzo Andreani, faction president of the SVP and member of the AR cantonal council. On the TVO program “Zur Sache” on February 25, Dr. Vogel emphasized that the reorientation of the acute somatic hospital and the Herisau Psychiatric Center must focus not only on the question of ownership, but above all on a sustainable concept geared to the care needs of the population. Among other things, Dr. Vogel suggested critically examining the range of acute somatic services and thinking about the need for basic medical care in an intersectoral way.
