Dr. David Ehlig presents on the future of AI-supported breast cancer screening at MIBB Symposium 2026
On 24 September 2026, the MIBB Symposium took place in Basel as part of the Annual Congress of the Swiss Society of Senology, bringing together experts to discuss recent developments and challenges in breast cancer diagnosis and care.
Dr. David Ehlig from the Chair of Health Economics, Policy and Management at the University of St.Gallen was invited to contribute to the symposium with a presentation entitled “The Future of Breast Cancer Screening in Switzerland – The Potential of Artificial Intelligence.”
Drawing on international evidence as well as research conducted in collaboration with the Cancer League of Eastern Switzerland, including the donna mammography screening programme, the presentation explored how artificial intelligence could help address current challenges in breast cancer screening, including missed and interval cancers, the workload associated with double reading, and the potential for more individualized, risk-based screening.
A key focus was how AI could be implemented responsibly in Switzerland. Current evidence suggests particular potential for AI-supported triage and workload reduction, while important questions remain regarding quality assurance, regulation, implementation models, and the evidence required for more personalized screening approaches.
The overarching message: the question is increasingly not whether AI will become part of breast cancer screening, but how it can be implemented to create greater benefit and less harm for women.
