Latest Findings from the ‘donna’ Mammography Screening Program

Health Economic Evaluation and Initial Findings from the Use of AI in the ‘donna’ Mammography Screening Program

On May 15, 2025, the School of Medicine at the University of St.Gallen and the Cancer League of Eastern Switzerland jointly hosted a public event at the HSG SQUARE. The focus was on presenting and discussing the results of a collaborative research project titled “Health Economic Evaluation and Initial Findings from the Use of AI in the ‘donna’ Mammography Screening Program.”

Experts and stakeholders from the healthcare sector gathered to explore key findings from the past year. The event provided valuable insights and fostered an open exchange of ideas, rounded off with an informal networking reception.

The program covered three main thematic areas: First, the question was addressed whether interval cancers are identified similarly by radiologists and AI systems in retrospective analyses. The second topic explored the cost-effectiveness of mammography screening programs. Lastly, the discussion focused on whether AI-assisted screening leads to improved breast cancer detection.

Some of these findings have already been presented at (inter)national conferences, such as the St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference, and are currently being prepared for academic publication. The presentation slides can be accessed here.

We extend our sincere thanks to all project contributors and participants for their dedication and thoughtful contributions. The event marks another important milestone in the application-oriented research on breast cancer and artificial intelligence – and we look forward to continuing this successful collaboration.
