The rising global incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases, such as type 2 diabetes (T2D), poses a substantial challenge to the Swiss healthcare system by contributing to a decline in the overall health of the population and a consequent rise in healthcare costs. The Enhancing T2D Care project seeks to address this challenge by assessing a therapeutic patient education (TPE) program that integrates Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). This approach is designed to enhance treatment outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of managing type 2 diabetes care.
We aim to assess an interdisciplinary, personalized program that integrates TPE elements to improve health outcomes and potentially achieve T2D remission. The program focuses on promoting self-care practices, individualized treatment plans involving different healthcare professionals, and regular collection of PROMs. We will test the (cost)-effectiveness of the program and its impact on key outcomes (e.g., HbA1c, health-related quality of life, or diabetes distress).
This project is running from 2024 to 2027 in the canton of Geneva, Switzerland. While other countries have implemented similar TPE components into structured T2D management programs, Switzerland currently lacks nationwide guidelines for T2D care that include these educational interventions. This study could provide the groundwork for expanding the program on a national scale across Switzerland.
