The future of breast cancer screening in Switzerland

Project description

The Cancer League of Eastern Switzerland is the largest screening program in Switzerland and has been operating early breast cancer detection programs since 2010, with over 50,000 mammograms being examined in this program every year. Various international publications as well as our own data analyses suggest that the program could be improved in the future through various measures/innovations. Examples of such measures include personalized screening age and personalized screening intervals, additional examinations to mammography, the use of artificial intelligence, or risk-adapted screening. For the continuous improvement of the breast cancer screening programs of the Cancer League of Eastern Switzerland, it is essential that international evidence of developments and innovations be made transparent and that their implementation be discussed. The aim of this project is to systematically assess international evidence on advancements and innovations in breast cancer screening, facilitate expert discussions on their potential implementation, and develop well-founded recommendations for the improvement of the Cancer League Eastern Switzerland's screening programs. By integrating insights from a scoping review and structured expert panels, we seek to identify best practices, assess their applicability within the Swiss healthcare system, and propose strategies to enhance screening effectiveness. The findings will be synthesized into a final report, which will provide a foundation for future improvements to the program.
