Breast Cancer Screening in Switzerland: Knowledge, Preventive Health Behaviour, and Factors Influencing Participation in Screening Examinations, with a Particular Focus on Mammography Screening Programmes

Project description

Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women in Switzerland. Each year, approximately 6,800 women and around 60 men are newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Mammography is the primary method used for breast cancer screening. The Swiss Cancer League recommends that women aged 50 and older undergo regular mammography, preferably as part of quality-assured screening programmes. Although the benefits of such programmes are scientifically established, not all eligible women make regular use of existing screening services. In addition, the availability of organised mammography screening programmes varies across regions in Switzerland.

The aim of this project is to examine how well women are informed about breast cancer screening, which screening services they use, and which factors influence their decision to participate or not participate in screening. Particular attention is given to mammography and to women’s awareness of existing screening programmes in Switzerland.

Data for this project will be collected nationwide through an anonymous, multilingual online survey. The survey will assess knowledge of breast cancer screening, preventive health behaviour, and potential barriers and facilitating factors influencing participation in screening examinations.

The findings are intended to support the development of evidence-based approaches to prevention and health education and to promote the use of effective breast cancer screening services in Switzerland.
